At one point, the second generation Apple TV was the most popular device for running Kodi. It was the first device to really make it easy to use Kodi directly from the comfort of your living room television, but it had its limitations. As of the Kodi 14.2 Helix release, Kodi support for the Apple TV 2 has been discontinued, it can still be installed, but will not be updated.

Apple never intended for Kodi to be installed to the Apple TV 2 device, so the first thing you’ll have to do is jailbreak your device. Once you’ve jailbroken your Apple TV 2 device, it’s fairly simple to get Kodi installed, although lately the Kodi installation servers for the Apple TV 2 have been running a bit slowly, you might have to try a few times before it works.

Please note that if your installation fails, you should follow the second guide at the bottom of this page.

Step 1: Once you’ve jailbroken your Apple TV 2 box, connect it to your television and internet. The rest of the process will take place wirelessly over your network.

Step 2: Launch the nitoInstaller app that you just downloaded. Be sure that your computer is connected to the same internet network as your Apple TV 2 device.

Step 3: Click on where it says Choose Apple TV and select your device from the drop down list.

Step 4: On the Apple TV 2 device, navigate to the Settings menu, followed by the General menu, and then the About tab. Verify that the IP Address matches the one displayed in the lower left corner of the nitoInstaller interface.

Step 5: Click on the Install Kodi button.

Step 6: Wait a few minutes for Kodi to install to the Apple TV 2 box.

Step 7: Once you see a green checkmark your Apple TV 2 should automatically reboot itself.

Step 8: Launch Kodi from your Apple TV 2 for the first time.

Now that you have Kodi installed to your Apple TV 2 device, you should go ahead and see which Kodi addons best suit your needs. Remember that the Apple TV 2 has limited resources, so you’re best to stick with only installing the Kodi addons you actually need.

Fixing a Broken Kodi Installation from nitoInstaller

Input the following commands, one by one, into the Insert optional ssh command input box, and press the run command button each time:

apt-get install wget

wget -O- http://apt.awkwardtv.org/awkwardtv.pub | apt-key add -

echo "deb http://apt.awkwardtv.org/ stable main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/awkwardtv.list

echo "deb http://mirrors.kodi.tv/apt/atv2 ./" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/xbmc.list

apt-get install org.xbmc.kodi-atv2

reboot

That should resolve your issue, Kodi should now appear on the second row of the main menu on your Apple TV 2 box. Now you’ll want to go ahead and get some Kodi addons installed, but keep in mind that resources are limited on the Apple TV 2, so less is definitely more.
